Outreach... the creepier and crawlier the better.
Me (beige cap) talking about (and eating!) termites with families at the LTEC.
"In the end we will conserve what we love. We will love what we understand. We will understand what we are taught." --Baba Dioum.
Whenever I can, I try to introduce students of all ages to the science, organisms, and habitats that I study.
Many outreach events in which I participated occurred at the USM Biology Department's Lake Thoreau Environmental Center (LTEC), a hidden gem in Hattiesburg with miles of trails through longleaf pine savanna, mixed mesic forests, and hardwood bottomlands.
The header photo on this page is from the 2-week long residential Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp hosted by USM Summer 2015 (I am in the back row, 5th from the right). We are standing in front of one of the largest pitcher plant bogs in the southeastern U.S., Buttercup Flats.

NSF GK12 Fellowship (Fall 2014 - 2015)
The GK-12 program pairs graduate students with high-school science teachers in the classroom, with the intent being that through this experience the graduate fellow develops the skills necessary to convey their science to any audience. I was paired with an amazing teacher, Ms. Star Hummel, and Sumrall High School. In Fall 2014 I helped structure labs for high school Biology I and II classes, and in Spring 2015 I helped incorporate new labs in to these same courses, as well as into an Earth Science course.

Teaching Assistant for Coastal Herpetology at GCRL, Ocean Springs, MS.
I have also enjoyed being the teaching assistant for the Gulf Coast Research Lab's Coastal Herpetology course during the Summer of 2014 and 2015 (photos below). For this course we spent two weeks immersing undergraduate and graduate students in herpetology, ecology, and conservation in South Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana.
